Forts & Monuments

Karnataka is a state in south India which is famous for its monuments. The south Indian kings like chalukyas, hoysalas etc had great love for buildings and architecture. And since they were religious people, most of the buildings are in form of temples and caves dedicated to various gods and goddesses. The intricate work of art on these monuments will engross and bind you in a spell. The sculpting and architectural excellence of the artists speaks for itself. The ideal location of these monuments makes adds ti their char. The lush green vegetation along with stone carved caves and structure is a lethal combination that would send you into trance and would make you think of those hands that built these monuments. Since all these kings were prosperous and ambitious they had to protect their palaces and various forts were built to strengthen the defence. History is brought alive by the lively and larger than life statues and idols.

So get enchanted and treat yourself with this great visual treat and all this is available in Karnataka.

The purpose varied according to their needs but most of the monuments and temples were built to make for strong defence against enemy, as places of worship and also their passion for art and architectural led them into these indulgence which stands as a silent testimony of the past.

Indians and foriegners, famous and commoners, everyone falls in love with them. 'Old is Gold' truly gets a meaning here.

Karnataka is full of monuments and each one has something special to offer, naming one or two would be injustice to others. The ancient capital of Chalukyas, Aihole is a hub of Indian architecture. This village has numerous temples scattered all over. Most of the temples date back to 6th and 8th centuries and some are even older. The cave temples at Badami are even bigger architectural wonder as they are carved into huge sandstones. The 4 main caves and few other are dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses. The huge mosques and mausoleums at Bijapur are another sights that make you wonder at the building skills of people of the by gone era. Belur, known as Banaras of the south, located at the river Yagachi, boasts of a lovely temple Chennakeshava that was built in 1116 AD. It took 103 years to complete the temple and that speaks volume for the intricate work on walls and ceilings here. Virupaksha temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The large statue of Nandi(Lord Shiva's mount) carved on a big stone, a huge statue of Lord Ganesha are also present in the temple. There is also a 7 meters high idol of Lord Narsimha (half man half lion). The Vithala Temple complex has a Stone Chariot whose wheels revolve. It is carved from a single stone and is also famous for its musical pillars striking which produces musical sound. The historical fort at Bidar belonged to Bahamani kings is surrounded by 3 mile wall and has 37 bastions with canons for defence. The huge fort that now lies in ruins still inspires awe. These are just to name a few but your visit would bring a whole lot of other remnants from the past before you.

Location : 60 kms north of Bangalore, Karnataka
Situated At : 1478 m above Sea Level
Main Sites : Tipu's Drop, Yoga Nandishvara Temple
Best Season : Throughout The Year

60 kms north of Bangalore is the summer resort called Nandi Hills. Also known as Nandidurga, it was one of the summer retreats of Tipu Sultan. Nandi Hills was popular with the British too who built bungalows and laid out gardens here.

Today of course, it's a hot favourite among Bangaloreans who find this an ideal get-away for weekends. The 1478-m high Nandi Hills is the originating point of many rivers.

And the forests surrounding the hills, abound with wild animals. Around the Nandi Hills are several smaller hills, which can be visited on foot.

Tipu's Drop:

A 600 m high cliff face where according to legend, condemned prisoners were pushed to their death. On misty days when the wind wails in the trees, you can almost hear the blood-curdling screams of the prisoners as they met their gruesome end. But look down on a clear day and the view is inspiring.

Yoga Nandishvara Temple:

This beautiful Chola temple has an inscription of Sambhaji, Shivaji's son. The Dwarapalakas, the splendid metallic figures are not-to-be-missed.

Lotus Palace
Location : Hampi, Karnataka
Unique Feature : Its Flower-Like Shape
Architectural Style : Islamic And Hindu Styles

Of the non-religious buildings in Hampi, probably the most photogenic is the Lotus Mahal. This graceful two-storeyed pavilion is located in the Zenana enclosure. The palace is a delightful synthesis of the Hindu and Islamic styles of architecture very different from the awesome grandeur of Hampi's temples. The palace with recessed archways, the huge Elephant Stables, the Mahanavami Dibba and so on, gives a glimpse of the past glory of the kingdom.

The building is an open pavilion on the lower level and built up with windows and balconies on the upper level. The palace gets its name from the beautifully recessed archways, set in geometric regularity and opening out to the sun and the wind, like the petals of a flower.
